What Superheroes Never Told You About Sex

My dear boy,

Before the world teaches you about sex, I must. Because what you don’t understand, you will misuse. And what you misuse can destroy you. “With great power comes great responsibility.” These are the words of Ben Parker to his nephew Peter Parker. One of my fond memories was watching Spider-Man 1 with my family. In fact, whatever you have these days, Spider-Man: Away from Home, Coming Back Home, they are nothing compared to Spider-Man 1. I know there’s a bias there, but it was the movie that had us as young people hoping to shoot webs out of our hands. There was this longing to be bitten by a spider. You had children, flushed with hope that this spider would be the spider.

Again, that tells you about the power of great storytelling. But that is not where I wish to dwell today. When you think about superheroes, there is one who really stands out. It’s indicative of the kind of world that we live in. Other superheroes, for me, that will stand out as natural talent. But then there is another superpower, which is money. The Batman, my goodness, has no physical strength whatsoever compared to other heroes, but he just has the gadgets.

Above all, the superhero franchises teach us that having a superpower is one thing; what we choose to do with our superpower is another thing. Many men never learn this early enough and spend years recovering from choices they did not understand. And as much as you’re born with a superpower, it takes a while to hone the superpower. In fact, in most cases, if not all, you need someone to teach you how to use that superpower for a great good.

You realize that the superpower you have is not necessarily used in pursuit of your selfish needs, because when you put yourself above the greater good, above others in the expression of your superpower, you become a villain. You have made it about yourself. You have made it about your alter ego. I see that that is something that a lot of people are very much interested in now. Again, that is not new. Frankenstein, the novel, proves so.

Sex is not just desire. Sex is power. But how you choose to use it determines if it promotes, if it preserves life, if it shows character, or if it would ultimately destroy you. 65% of girls who had premarital sex wish they had waited. Likewise, 57% of boys who had premarital sex wish they had waited.

What does that tell us? It’s all muddy waters. Perhaps these had no one to show them the way; they had no one to talk to, which raises a deeper question: Who is really raising the child? But ultimately, there is one person who is willing to listen to us at all times on such matters, our heavenly Father. A passage that encourages me every time to go to Him with everything is that He has given me everything that pertains to life and godliness. And if He has done that, it goes to show that He’s interested in every aspect of our lives.

So what choice have you made? And I’m going to say this: a man must not be ashamed of his erections. No, it’s something that you must embrace, because it is the Lord God who put it there. In fact, you should be very worried if you woke up and didn’t have any. Something is wrong. So you wake up, you have some, or during the day, there are taps here and there. Be grateful for that. Just lift up your voice and say, Lord, thank you, because I’m healthy. What does that do? It acknowledges what’s happening within whilst keeping you pure.

At the end of the day, purity is not necessarily what we don’t do; it is what we have chosen to do. That is where true power comes from. Hence, you must decide for yourself: what do I want? Because if you do not know yourself, you will misuse your power.  My dear boy, there is a way that seemeth right unto man, but the end thereof is destruction. As such, remember this, my dear boy, sex is power. Used well, it builds. Used wrongly, it destroys. The choice will always be yours. Stay pure, stay true. Stay on God.

Love,

Dad.
