Start Stupid

Why Inexperience Might Be Your Greatest Advantage

by Frank Clinton
Start Stupid

My dear boy,

It has now become commonplace, my attempt, to extrapolate certain ideas which may appear to be of no relevance to your age. Nevertheless, it is intentional. I firmly believe that, should I come upon success in such an attempt, I, myself, could claim a deeper understanding of these ideas. I dare say that to teach is the quiet admission to learn.

With that said, start stupid.

See, lack of experience can be your greatest gift. Per Sundin, CEO, Universal Music Nordic Region, speaking about Arash “Ash” Pournouri, Co-writer, Executive Producer and Manager of Avicii (2008 – 2016) in Avicii – I’m Tim, says, “Ash was the dream maker. Due to his lack of experience, he never really understood how hard it would be. That made it easier for him to just go for it.” Too many dreams die in the valley of overthinking and overplanning. Just plunge in, boy! Start stupid!

The path becomes clearer as you travel, I promise. My favorite quote in recent times is, “We do these things not because they are easy, but because we thought they were going to be easy.” Therefore, I urge you to start doing; to start stupid; to start nonetheless.

Love,

Dad.
