Dear Writers, Home calls you…

Recently, I was privileged to lead a number of teenagers to render a song about fulfillment and jubilation in the church. Amongst the students, some were given other tasks, as a way of adding spice. Dance, Drama and the likes were the condiments. I was eager for the manifestation.

During the rehearsals, on a particular day, I was teaching them a song with so much enthusiasm. I noticed one of the students wasn’t involved. So I walked up to her and she showed me a book filled with verses and lines of a poem she was working on. You could see how her pens crossed some of the lines, showing she had made a couple of errors and was trying to rectify them.

She said, “Ma, I was told to render a spoken word poem and this is what I could come up with.” I quickly glanced through it because I wasn’t focused but I noticed she wanted more than that. So, I gave her the permission to step away from the others to figure out what she was writing on.

Few days to the D-Day, I noticed she was nervous and felt she couldn’t present it. At first, it looked like fright but I realized it was beyond that.

She shared her concerns about how a certain people are uninterested with poetry and can’t relate with its essence. She also reacted to settling with how the community she belonged to was her final bus stop to showcasing her works and then this is where it dawned on me.
