A Father's Reflection on Purpose and Pride

by Frank Clinton
Blessings That Can Curse

My dear boy,

I write these letters to you to show that I am human. Daddy is not some superhero who has it all figured out. Daddy has his fears. Hayden Sixx said, “Bravery and stupidity are the same thing. The outcome determines your label.” The former, fortunately, has been my label.

My son, indulge me. I wholly enjoy what I do in the male space: designing multiple mentorship programs for teenage boys and young men, as well as hosting events that promote the general well-being of men. This, I consider, the greatest privilege of my life, only second to being a father. Nonetheless, I do not wish to be called a men’s rights activist. I genuinely do not intend to make a career out of it, in that activism as a career in itself is a contradiction.

Walk with me. The career dies when the problem is solved. To choose activism as a career underscores a hope, buried deep within, that the problem will never get solved while appearing to solve the problem. Say, a patient cured is a customer lost. So, to have a career and stay in business, one treats the symptoms and never the root cause, even to the point of making up new problems.

Hence, I frankly hope I never wake up and pick this up as a profession. Nonetheless, you can bet that I will preach the message of purpose pursuit till my dying breath. In all, I am grateful to all who have supported me and have invited me into their forum.

To the adventures ahead, I say, cheers!

Love,

Dad.
